In people within a healthy weight range, 60-80 percent of their total body weight is water. Water is necessary for proper digestion; it enables the absorption of nutrients from our food, and it enables our liver and kidneys to process and discharge waste. So staying properly hydrated keeps our body’s natural detox mechanisms functioning optimally.

Dehydration can prompt a myriad of discomforts including hunger, fatigue, and headaches, and over time can lead to joint pain and weight gain to ulcers, cellular inflammation, high blood pressure and even kidney disease. So as it’s important to stay well hydrated for our over all well-being and health, here’s some tips to accomplish this each and every day.

Good Morning! Start your day off with a tall glass of room temperature water. Your body is thirsty after a night’s sleep and this tip will help you kick start your morning and you may even reduce your dependency on the second cup of caffeine. Drinking Gerolstiener may also restore your body’s pH levels.

Drink Often. Repeat: Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate, it’s better to sip continually throughout the day. Whether you sit at your desk every day or you are out and about, having water close on hand is crucial for staying well hydrated. Before, During and After: When exercising at any level, it’s even more important to stay well hydrated and the trick is to remember to drink about 1/2 hour before you exercise, stay refreshed during your work out and again after, so you fully replenish the fluids you’ve expended. The simple truth is that fresh natural food is essential for our well-being, and in this age of overly processed food, and so-called quick fixes, returning to cleaner, more natural foods is one way you can take control of your health. 

So in addition to Ariane’s advice in our Facebook Group here are a few more tips to create to sustainable and long-term habits to boost your food detox factor.

Plants First: Nutrient-dense plant-based foods are the nutritional stars; dark leafy greens, root vegetables, and pulses (beans, lentils, etc.), are all loaded with vitamins, antioxidants and contain plenty of anti-inflammatory properties. They promote a healthy liver, and kidney function and their fiber content also improves your digestive system. How’s that for a win-win!

Go Whole: The less processed your food is, the better it is for you, so try switching your regular pasta and rice for whole grain versions. This way you can vamp up the health quota of your favorite dishes, without any sacrifice.

Curb the Salt: While salt is a natural go-to flavor enhancer, experiment with finely chopped fresh herbs, and lemon or lime juice to brighten your dishes, and do your heart a big favor! Aromatics like garlic and ginger also boost detoxing agents that can help your body flush out unwanted toxins. Garlic is naturally antiviral, antibacterial, and antibiotic because it contains allicin, a compound that increases white blood cell to fight free radicals. Ginger encourages digestion and strengthens immunity.

Drizzle It: Switch out animals fats and generic processed vegetable oils for single-sourced monounsaturated fats. Olive oils and seed oils typically have more heart-healthy omega-3’s.

Get Nutty: Not only are nuts and seeds excellent sources of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, but they are also snack-friendly nibbles. Toss a handful of nuts or seeds like chia, flax or sunflower on to your salad or breakfast bowl for extra crunch.

Cook! Finally, preparing your own meals gives you much more control over what you put in your body, so try to cook more at home. Even cooking just one more meal a week, (with enough for leftovers for lunch the next day!) will be a significant step towards maintaining your food detox factor!

Day 3: The Mind Detox Factor

In our 24/7 whirlwind world, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of life. Practicing some self-care tips can help you relax, improve your mental focus and energize your body. Here are a few of our favorites. 

Put Down That Phone! De-stressing can be as easy as giving yourself a break from social media, texting, and scrolling. Shut down all those open tabs on your computer, close out those apps and put your phone away. Start with two 1/2 hour increments and then give yourself longer goals and before you know it you’ll have more time for yourself and those around you! Your body and mind will thank you, and you may actually enjoy your digital time even more!

Be in the Moment: Multi-tasking has become the norm, yet recent studies show that it can reduce productivity by as much as 40 percent, and the stain of trying to accomplish too many things at once shoots our stress levels off the charts! Most of us don’t actually multitask, but shift from one task to another. You’re likely to be more efficient (40%!) if you gave each task at hand your full attention, not only are you more likely to complete it more quickly, but also to a higher standard!

Clear Your Mind: Meditation, also known as mindfulness is a powerful way to relieve stress levels. Even on a hectic schedule, setting aside as little as 5-10 minutes on a daily basis can help achieve this. Just clear out the mind, give yourself some silent time, focus on your breathing, let your thoughts roam. Don’t settle on any single idea, just allow the jumble roll on and breathe. The benefits of daily meditation practice can promote calmness throughout your entire day. 

Care for Yourself: Sophrology is a stress-management technique that combines breathing, mindfulness, and gentle movement to relax your mind and body. Just as you need to take rest breaks when exercising, you need to give your brain a restorative break too. Once you learn what your personal stressors are, you can apply this technique any time, anywhere. 

Eating Habits: As Ariane mentions in today’s Facebook post, how you eat can be a stress factor. Distracted and mindless eating can cause you to overeat and eat the wrong foods and reduce the nutritional benefits of your meal. Set aside at least 20 minutes to enjoy your meal. Focus on the food in front of you - notice its colors, aromas, and textures. Take small bites, chew and savor each taste. Put down your utensil between bites, so you’re less tempted to wolf your food down. 

In fact, a healthful diet and regular exercise are themselves a dynamo duo for helping keep your mind razor-sharp, so a focus on these two #sparklingdetox factors is a smart way to go!

Day 4: The Exercise Detox Factor

As fitness expert, Ariane Hundt clearly explains in her Facebook post, exercise does not have to be a significant time commitment. It's becoming increasingly clear that your body needs constant movement to function optimally, and this includes general movements as well as focused workouts. It’s important to move and be active and interval training throughout the day can have the same impact as an hour in the gym. Here we share some more tips on how you can increase your daily movement quota, no gym outfit or shoes required.

  • Uninterrupted sitting that is detrimental to your health, and while standing desks are popular, but you don’t need one. Standing and stretching every 45 minutes will increase your circulation and can even help you focus.
  • Rearrange your stuff, so everything is not within arm’s reach. This will prompt you to get out of your chair more often.
  • Skip the elevator and/or the escalator and take the stairs to and from your office, at your train station, or in the mall.
  • Park your car at the furthest end of the parking lot from your destination, be it your office, a restaurant or supermarket.
  • Find a walking work buddy and commit to taking a walk at lunchtime - this will not only aid digestion but also help clear your mind, so you return to your office refreshed.
  • Build a habit of doing at least one household chore daily; vacuuming, laundry, gardening. You’ll increase your movement quota and free up your weekends!
  • When watching television select your show and then put the remote by the television before you plonk yourself on your couch. Use the commercial time to get in a few squats too!

Day 5: The Simplicity Detox Factor

Has clutter invaded your desk? Your refrigerator? Your closet? Your garage? Too often, we think our messiness is a space or time issue and all we need is either more boxes or shelving, but actually, it’s about you and your lifestyle. We live in a very consumer-centric society, and it can seem effortless to end up with too much stuff!  

When your environment is cluttered, your ability to focus is affected, and your brain’s ability to process information is limited. Clutter can impact your health in several ways, from decreasing the likelihood of exercising, heightening anxiety levels and causing more allergies (due to dust, mold, mites, etc.), to strengthening procrastination, prompting fatigue and even causing weight gain. Feeling stressed about clutter can trigger the release of stress hormones such as cortisol, which as Ariane Hundt explained in her Facebook post yesterday can negatively impact your health. 

Getting organized is unquestionably good for your body and mind. Some simple steps to relive the clutter include:

Partner-Up: Invite someone to help you tackle your clutter. Whoever you choose is unlikely to have the same attachments to your stuff and can make more rational decisions, and in turn, you can do the same for them. 

Grab A Box: Start in one room and place an open box in a corner. Place items you don’t use in the box, and after a designated time, if you’ve not returned to the box to pull out an article, you will know you no longer need it, and it can be discarded. 

Make A Plan: Set yourself a simple goal, for example, cleaning one storage space a week and tell your circle of family and friend about your plan. This will help you be accountable to yourself! 

Simplifying your life and creating balance can help you live a more expanded one, and improve the overall quality and enjoyment of your life. Letting go of stuff, be they things or emotions can open you up to new experiences and enable you to live in the moment. 

The concept of “work-life balance” is in itself a slightly skewed concept as it presumes your work is not part of your life. It is! Working more extended hours does not necessarily increase productivity, and over time can take a toll on your physical and mental health. You can’t create more time, so it’s important to set limits and manage your time spent on all your life’s activities. Rather than have a separate calendar for work shifts, meetings, and deadlines, build an integrated one with all your personal obligations included. This will quickly show you how you spend your time and you can adjust accordingly. And yes, there’s an app for that!
